DPA sweeps municipality in Local Body polls

Pondicherry, July 4 (UNI) The ruling Democratic Progressive Alliance(DPA) captured four municipalities out of the five when all the results of the three phase Local Body elections in the Union Territory of Pondicherry, held after a gap of 38 years, were announced around midnight on July three.

The Congress party won the Ozhukarai, Mahe and Yanam municipal Chairman post, while its alliance partner DMK, had won the Pondicherry municipal chairman post. Congress candidates N S J Jayapal(Ozhukarai), Ramesh Parambath(Mahe) and Gidla Chandra Rao(Yanam) and DMK candidate Dr Sridevi were declared elected.

The DMK, however, sprang a surprise when it bagged the Karaikal municipal chairman post to open its account in the Union Territory of Pondicherry.The party also bagged three posts of municipal Councillors in Karaikal.

In Yanam municipality, the Congress won nine out of the ten post of Councillors, leaving one to AIADMK, while the party had bagged seven Councillor posts, out of the total of 18 in Karaikal. The DMK won five, DMDK three, Independents two and PMC one.

In Mahe municipality, the Congress bagged seven out of the total of 15 Councillors, followed by six by the CPM and two independents.

In Pondicherry municipality, the Congress and DMK combine won 21 out of the 42 councillors post with the DMK accounting for 12 and Congress nine. The PMC won five, AIADMK four, Independents 11 and CPI one.

The Congress won 15 out of the 37 councillors posts in Ozhukarai municipality, while the DMK bagged six. Others who won the seats were Independents-eight, PMC-two, CPI-four, AIADMK and PMK one each.

As many as 98 commune panchayat council members, 98 village panchayat presidents and 815 village panchayat ward members were also elected in the elections.
