Bhopal, July 3 (UNI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi today fired a broadside at Madhya Pradesh's BJP government by alleging it had failed to fulfill promises made during the 2003 Assembly election.

''It is easy to attain power by playing with people's sentiments and beguiling innocents but only the Congress has been sincerely serving the poor and will continue to do so,'' she said while addressing the party's state-level representatives' convention.

Alleging that the BJP had been exposed across India, Ms Gandhi said even in this state, the saffron party's image was sullied by its own actions.

''The plight of Madhya Pradesh's poor and farmers is worsening even as the law and order situation has deteriorated while the power situation worsened,'' she said while issuing a clarion call to party members to make the public aware of the factual position and continue a struggle against a party with an ''opposite'' ideology.

Referring to centrally-sponsored welfare schemes, the Congress chief claimed that the Centre was disbursing funds but honest implementation was upto the state government.
