Need to reach organised sports to youths: Aiyar
New Delhi, July 3 (UNI) Observing that youth development including educational sports occupeis a significant role in the futureofoverall national development, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare Mani Shakar Aiyar today expessed his concern saying organised sports was not reaching the areas where talents are to be found.
Quoting a UGC report that said that only 30 million children in schools were able to access any organised sports or games,he said "this is a growing lacunae in youth development that we as nation need to address." Talking to newspersons here, Mr Aiyar pointd out that 45 crore youths from infants to 35 year old live in rural India. For this 45 crore youths there was a scheme for rural sports infrastructure which was funded at a rate of Rs 45 crore a year, approximately Rs one per youth per year.Even this modest scheme was closed down during the year 2005-06 before he became the Sports Minister."I am now trying to review it." "I as a Minister of Sports am making it a meaningful Ministry by securing the acceptance of the proposal of Panchayat Yuva Khel Abhiyan, through which I will synergise of two of the most widespread organising network-205 youth clubs under the Nehru Yuva Kendra and 205 Panchyat Raj Sangathans.
The Minister said during his etensive tour of the villages the most insistent demand he came across was for provision for playing facility. The most elementary requirement for it is land but that as not available as either it was with the Government or in control of temples.
Mr Aiyar said Sports being the state subject, the states could provide the land but it had not been done or done unsatisfactorily, He felt that with the covergence of the schemes like the SGRY,NREG and others funds jfor playgrounds of a modest kind could be managed in every panchayt. This will entail a cost of Rs one lakh each.
''If khei Abhiyan succeeds organised spors could be made available to 450 million youth, ''Mr Aiyar said, ''we will then find footballers, cycllists, whimmers and other sportsmen, UNI YS PDS RN2011
