Narmada Oversight committee submits report

New Delhi, July 3 (UNI) The Narmada Oversight Committee headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) V K Shunglu today submitted the status report on the rehabilitation of the oustees in the Sardar Sarovar Project involving the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz confirmed the receipt of the report and said he had handed over the same to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The three-member Committee constituted in April this year has done a ''commendable work'', he said.

''This would help the government fulfil its commitment to submit the report in three months time to the Supreme Court,'' Prof Soz told reporters.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University G K Chadha and Dr Jaya Prakash Narain, head of an NGO 'Lok Satta' were the other two members of the Oversight Committee.

The committee was entrusted with the task of undertaking sample checks to ascertain the facts of rehabilitation. ''Estimate, on the basis of sample checks, the number of Project Affected Families who may not have received so far and Ascertain, on the basis of sample checks, if offers of alternate land to eligible oustees were made in a fair and transparent manner.''
