Militant behind attack on tourists among 2 killed
Srinagar, July 3 (UNI) Two militants, including the mastermind behind the grenade attack on tourists here, were killed by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir police today.
Inspector General (IG) of CRPF A P Meshewari told UNI that a search operation was launched at Wongam Harwan village this afternoon following a tip-off that some militants were hiding there.
As the CRPF and SOG personnel were sealing the area, militants opened fire and in the ensuing encounter two militants were killed.
He said one of the militant was identified as Qasim, the brain behind the grenade attack on tourists at Zakoora on May 25 in which five tourists from Gujarat were killed.
Mr Meshwari said Qasim, a foreign militant, was responsible for other acts of violence in the area.
A CRPF jawan and a police constable were injured in the shootout, he said and added that two AK rifles, two pistols, six grenades, two improvised explosive devices (IED), 600 rounds of ammunition, one wirless set and two mobile phones were recovered fromt the slain militants.
He said other militants, responsible for other attacks in the city have also been identified and a massive hunt has been launched to nab them.
