Army officer, 8 ultras among 11 killed in J and K

Srinagar, July 3 (UNI) Eight militants, including the mastermind behind the recent attack on tourists, and a junior Army officer were among 11 people killed in Jammu and Kashmir.

CRPF Inspector General (IG) A P Maheshwari told UNI that a search operation was launched at village Wongam Harwan this afternoon following a tip off that some militants were hiding there.

As the CRPF and SOG personnel were sealing the area, militants opened fire. The fire was returned and in the fierce clash two militants were killed.

He said one of the militant, self styled area commander of Al-badr, was identified as Qasim, the brain behind the grenade attack on tourists at Zakoora on May 25 in which five tourists from Gujarat were killed.

Mr Maheshwari said Qasim, a foreign militant, was responsible for other acts of violence in the area.

A CRPF jawan and a police constable were injured in the shootout, he said and added two AK rifles, two pistols, six grenades, two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), 600 rounds of ammunition, one wireless set and two mobile phones were recovered from the slain militants.

He said other militants, responsible for other attacks in the city have also been identified and a massive hunt has been launched to nab them.

They said a militant was gunned down by security forces at Ishbar on the outskirts of the city.

Official sources said a search operation, started last evening, ended this afternoon after both the militants holed up inside two adjecent houses were killed.

The slain militants were identified as Abu Umar and Abu Ali, residents of Pakistan, they said. Seven houses and two cowshed were damaged in the 20-hour-long clash.

Earlier, army launched a final assault this morning against the holed up militants, he said.

He said with the break of down, troops went all out against the militants, who were holed up in the house since last evening when a search party of 14 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was attacked by the militants at Gamaru in Bandipora area at 1715 hrs.
