India not isolated in walking out of WTO talks, says Kamal Nath

New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) Over 110 countries have endorsed India's stand of walkimg out of the WTO talks at the Geneva mini-ministerial meeting and New Delhi was not at all isolated, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said today.

''Over 110 developing countries, at thier meeting yesterday, had endorsed our position,'' Mr Kamal Nath told reporters at the Indira Gandhi Internation airport on his arrival from Geneva this morning.

The WTO talks to salvage the beleaguered Doha Round collapsed yesterday on the second day of the three-day meeting of over 60 Trade Ministers.

Mr Kamal Nath said that until the developed countries like the US and EU recognise and remove the structural flaws, it would not be possible for India to participate or subscribe to any agreement.

With India walking out of the trade talks and a majority of the member countries supporting its stand, the WTO has plunged into a deep crisis.

''We must be lucid in admitting that we are in crisis,'' WTO Director General Pascal Lamy had said immediately after the abrupt end of what were meant to be the crucial negotiations.

The multi-lateral talks failed in the backdrop of wide differences between the rich and developing nations over the question of ending the trade-distorting agricultural subsidies. Instead of reducing subsidies to their rich farmers, the US, EU and Japan want more access to markets like India.

Farmers in India are committing suicides due to adeverse agricultural conditions.
