Congress to go alone in 2007 UP assembly polls
Farrukhabad, July 1: The Congress has reiterated the party would contest the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections on its own.
Talking to newspersons here last night, UP Congress Committee (UPCC) president Salman Khurshid said in wake of the coming polls, about 150 candidates would be selected by the party in the next two months.
''We will fight the polls with all our might,'' he added.
Mr Khurshid also asserted he was not a claimant for the chief minister's post.
Meanwhile, he announced the party would hold state-wide agitation on July 5 over ''dismal'' law and order situation in UP and lack of basic amenities for people such as water and electricity.
On the campaign launched by former prime minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh against the ''anti-people'' policies of the state government, the Congress leader claimed the Kisan Manch chief was a former PM and does not need any help.
''Mr Singh is speaking for the welfare of the common people,'' the UPCC chief added.
