Chennai, Jun 30 (UNI) Sri Lankan Tamil refugees seeking asylum at Mandapam camp are properly screened and interrogated for any connection with the LTTE before allotting an identity card, a release from the State DGP's office said.

Responding to a report in an English daily yesterday that 15 to 20 per cent of Tamil refugees arriving in the state were trained in self defence by the LTTE, the release clarified that the refugees were only allowed to occupy the open camp at Mandapam. Those refugees' whose antecedents were doubtful were quarantined at a separate camp in Mandapam for a maximum period of one month.

If any suspects were found trained by any militant groups in Sri Lanka or any were drop-outs of militant groups, they were lodged at a special camp at Chengalpattu or Cheyyar under Section 3(2)(e) of the Foreigners' Act, 1946.

The state police had adequate mechanism to screen the refugees arriving in the state. At present, 24 Sri Lankan Tamils were lodged in the special camp at Chengalpattu. Of these, six were LTTE drop outs or agents and other three were militants, the release added.
