Mumbai, June 28 (UNI) Maharashtra Government today decided to scrap the direct elections for Municipal council presidentship with a view to making the municipal council administration more effective and efficient.

The decision was taken at the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh here today.

An official release issued here said that even though a Municipal council president is elected directly, he has no administrative or financial powers. Besides, there is no control over his functioning due to the provision that a municipal council president can not be removed from his post for three years.

This has not served the purpose of making the municipal council administration effective and efficient, the government felt.

Hence, it was decided to revert back to the election process which existed before 2002 where the municipal council president was elected by the members.

Suitable amendments would be made to the Maharashtra Municipal council, nagar panchayats, industrial township act of 1965. About 50 per cent councillors will have to give notice to the District collector for bringing a no-confidence motion against the Council president and the motion has to be passed by a three-fourth majority. But, such a motion can not be brought for two years due to the election of a municipal council president.
