Meghalaya Govt to set up special court for women
Shillong, Jun 28 (UNI) Meghalaya will set up a special court to look into crimes against women.
State Home Minister Robert Garnett Lyngdoh told members of the House today that a special women's cell has already been set up in each districts, headed by a Sub Inspector and assisted by women constables.
Replying to a query raised by Independent MLA Manas Chaudhuri during Question hour, the Home Minister said 103 cases have been registered on crimes committed against women here from 2001-2005.
This year only, the police have registered 45 cases of violence against women, the Home minister informed.
Out of the 103 cases registered, he said 78 have already been charge sheeted, 20 cases were pending while 44 cases ended in Final Report.
However, the minister said that the court has convicted only one person in this connection during 2002.
Mr Lyngdoh also informed the Assembly that all steps had been taken to tackle crime against women in the state. He said the police department was working in close co-ordination with the State Women Commission and other women NGOs in this regard.
