HSBC staffer remanded in police custody
Bangalore, June 28 (UNI) A city court today remanded an employee of a multinational bank here to seven-day police custody for theft of data which was used to illegally transfer money from the bank accounts of UK-based customers.
Sleuths belonging to the Corps of Detectives (CoD) arrested Nadeem Kashmiri last night. He was working with HSBC Data Processing India Ltd (HDPI) until he was suspended on June three.
He had allegedly helped his accomplices in the UK to siphon off 2.33 lakh pounds by fraudulent transactions through ATM, debit cards and telephone banking services.
The fraud came to light after some account holders in Britain had complained to HSBC that money in their accounts had been debited without their knowledge. Following this HDPI filed a complaint with the cyber crime police station.
In its complaint, the bank alleged that Nadeem had accessed to personal, security and debit card information of some of its customers in the UK and passed it on to 'co-fraudsters' for conducting the transactions.
On interrogation, the accused revealed that he had been lured into the fraud by some unknown people in the UK who had promised him a job in the European nation and cash in return for confidential data.
Meanwhile, Director-General of Police (CoD) K R Srinivasan told UNI that the police had embarked on the task of tracking down Nadeem's accomplices and might seek the help of interpol, if need be.
He said the accused had carried out six transactions before the bank management could stop them with the help of its internal security techniques.
