Patna, June 27 (UNI) The Bihar Cabinet today approved new recruitment rules initiating the process for the appointment of over two lakh teachers for primary, middle, secondary and senior secendary schools in the state.

State Education Minister Brishen Patel told newspersons here that the process included a huge backlog of teachers' vacancies pending for over a decade.

He said the recruitment exercise was a major breakthrough in regard to decentralisation and devolution of powers to the Panchayati Raj Institutions for management of school education as envisaged under 73rd and 74th amendment of the Constitution, a commitment and promise made by the NDA government ever since it came to power six months ago.

The Cabinet also sanctioned 60,000 new posts for primary teachers for bringing teacher pupil ratio to the national norm of 1:40. The crowded classrooms in Bihar schools had one teacher for 62 children, Education Secretary Madan Mohan Jha added.

Mr Jha said at the secondary state, 10,000 teachers posts had been created for upgrading 1000 middle schools in response to the demand of more of secondary schools, particularly for the girls.

In addition, 1200 posts of senior secondary teachers had been created for upgrading 100 secondary schools to the plus two stage, a process for delinking inter education from unvirsity and colleges, which had already begun from the current academic session.
