K'taka Assembly expresses concern over increasing accidents

Bangalore, June 27 (UNI) Accidents across Karnataka since the dawn of the new century has taken a toll of 39,366, with this technopolis and the Bangalore district together accounting for 9,089 deaths.

During the question hour in the assembly, members cutting across party lines expressed serious concern over the growing number accidents and the quality of healthcare available in trauma centres.

Replying to Basavaraj Rayaraddi (Cong), Home Minister M P Prakash said lack of self-regulation among the driving public was the main cause of accidents.

He said that between January one, 2000 and March 31, 2006 as many as 34,642 fatal cases were reported, with 39,366 killed and 294,931 injured. After the city and Bangalore district, the highest number of casualities was reported in Belgaum, where 2,869 had been killed in accidents.

The district wise statistics provided by the minister also included death of 133 people in railway accidents in the state.
