IIM-A board silent on quota for OBC, takes global initiatives

Ahmedabad, June 27 (UNI) The Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM-A) is learnt to have taken stock of the situation arising out of the Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh's diktat to have 27 per cent quota for OBC, at its meeting here yesterday, but refuse to disclose any information on their deliberations.

When contacted, IIM-A director Bakul Dholakia refused to comment on the issue as he happens to be a member of the experts committe to suggest by July 31, ways to the 13-member Oversight Committee, headed by Administrative Reforms Committee chairman Veerappa Moily.

The Oversight Committee on its part has been told to submit its report to the HRD Ministry by August 31 this year, so that the quota could be implemented in IIMs, IITs and central universities.

As part of the six-member sub-committee for preparing a roadmap as to how to go about implementing the quota for management institutes, Dr Dholakia had been to Bangalore and Chennai last fortnight to discuss the issue.

However, sources here today said, the Board took a couple of other decisions to lend a global face to the premier institute, besides deciding to re-employ retired faculty for maximum three years, with a view to meet severe shortage of faculty.

The policy decision to utilise the services of retired faculty was approved by the Board in December last year itself, before the quota issue lent it urgency.

One senior professor, who retired three months back, was re-employed for three years. The Board discussed issues to expand the scope of the policy.
