High Court cancels recognition to B. Ed colleges
Kolkata, June 27 (UNI) Calcuta High Court today passed an order cancelling recognition of the B.Ed college under four state universities, which had not followed the norms of the National Council for Teacher Education before starting the college.
A two-judge bench, presided over by Chief Justice V S Sirpurkar, passed the judgement on a petition, filed by counsel Anjan Bhattacharjee, alleging that the colleges were being run without sanction of the NCTE and they do not have the infrastructure for conducting the courses.
The bench hailed that the four universities -- Calcutta, Burdwan, Kalyani and Vidyasagar -- could not hold classes for academic year 2005-06 and they would lose the right to give certificates for the courses to the students of these colleges.
According to Mr Bhattacharjee, nearly 5000 students of the 28 colleges would face uncertain future following the judgement.
He said more colleges of the four universities were being run sans the permission of the NCTE, but the court did not have the names of the colleges.
Once the court got the names of the colleges, the recognition would also be cancelled.
Earlier, the court cancelled recognition of the colleges attached to the North Bengal universities on the same ground.
Advocate General Balai Ray pleaded with the court for maintaining status quo of the colleges so that future of the students was not hampered, but the court refused to accept his contention, saying the state should do the needful for regaining recognition for the colleges.
