Flood situation improves in Asom, erosion continues

Guwahati, June 27 (UNI) The overall flood situation in Asom improved but the state is facing a new threat as erosion continues in several places.

The Brahmaputra is flowing slightly above the danger level at Dibrugarh but in some other places the river is receding.

All major tributaries of Brahmaputra and Barak are flowing below the danger level.

However, with the receding of water levels, severe erosion has been reported in Mankachar, south Salmara area of Lower Asom's Dhubri district and Chapori in Jorhat District.

Over 5.75 lakh people were affected due to the floods in 17 districts so far, spreading over 850 villages in 49,124 hectres and a total 9,705 hectres of crop land had been affected in the state.

Asom Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman said at a meeting yesterday the state government is focussing on pro-active prevention, preparedness and mitigation rather than 're-active' relief and rehabilitation approach.

He said the state government has taken up measures against the natural disaster in right earnest.
