Dengue under control in Bengal : Health Minister

Kolkata, Jun 27 (UNI) West Bengal Health Minister Suryaksnta Mishra today categorically denied any dengue-related death in the state recently and claimed that the water-borne disease was now fully under control.

Speaking to newsmen following reports of sudden outbreak of Dengue in some localities in the city creating a fear phychosis among the people, Dr Mishra decribing the situation as "near normal", however, agreed that about 50 odd people had so far been affected in Southern fringe of the city.

He said every month about three to four such cases were being reported in state government hospitals which compared to other states was far less.

Dr Mishra said across the globe about 20 million people, mostly in third world, were affected by similar water-borne diseases.

Referring to the adequare preventive steps to stop the further spread of the disease in new areas, the Health Minister informed that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the state Health department had already launched a massive public awareness campaign besides a cleaning drive to stop recurrence of Dengue.

There was no cause for concern at present, he reiterated.
