Cong rebuffs Mulayam on Emergency
New Delhi, Jun 27 (UNI) Reacting sharply to Mulayam Singh Yadav's charge that the Congress might impose emergency in the country, the party today said that it was the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister who had built up an emergency like situation within his Samajvadi Party.
Samajvadi Party workers were feeling terrorised and suffocated due to nepotism rampant in the party and those who gathered courage to speak up were removed from the party as happened with Raj Babbar, Congress Spokesman Rajeev Shukla told reporters here.
Stating that Mr Mulayam Singh suffered from a phobia of opposing Congress President Sonia Gandhi, he said the Chief Minister was reminded of Emergency days at a time when Assembly elections in the State were approaching."Why did he(Mulayam Singh) not remember Emergency when he sought Congress support to form a Government?" he asked.
Accusing Mr Mulayam Singh of having a "nexus" with the NDA, Mr Shukla said Mr George Fernandes was working as a channel for him to maintain contact with the NDA.His meeting today with Mr Fernandes was an indication that he was in league with the NDA.
Mr Shukla said the Chief Minister was doling out money to his party workers as unemployment alowance with an eye on the Assembly elections. ''Why didn't he distribute Rs 500 three years ago? he asked, and said it was being done now because his party was receiving funds. Having once won the Assembly elections, Mr Singh would stop doling out money, he said, adding the people could not be taken in by such antics.
Mr Shukla also said that Mr Yadav was trying to woo old socialists by giving them Rs 500 and thereby humiliating them as socialists had the capacity to give hundreds of crores of money to others.
