Guwahati, Jun 26 (UNI) If you are fed up with your cutlery and looking for something really extraordinary, you can try the new cutlery made of bamboo.

The Eco-friendly and long lasting bamboo cutlery have reached the market, thanks to the untiring effort of a single man, Tridib Mahanta, the only man to know this craft in this part.

"I work nine hours a day. I do everything myself as I haven't found many people to have interest in the craft," he said, taking time out of his first ever solo exhibition.

The ever-versatile bamboo has seen all sorts of variations in the recent times but no one has attempted or thought of its use it as cutlery, which will compete with even the best made out of silver. It is difficult to comprehend that such fine cutlery has been made out of bamboo, which is not considered a very good material for woodcraft.

His bamboo cutleries are not for single use but can be washed and used again and again. He has already created a niche market for himself in this fine art but admits that he and the art form can survive only through more networking.

"I need more networking and more buyers," he said displaying his ray of products. From serving spoon to ice cream spoon fork, knives and even pan spoons have also been made from bamboo.

"They are heat resistance and forks are perfectly safe and in my estimation it should last at least 20 years," he said with great pride.

He should be proud because he made every single piece of his cutlery without using any modern equipment.

"I have developed about 75 different tools for the craft but all of them were born out of necessity and they are not handmade and can not be bought in the market. Perhaps I have to bring in some machinery. But for perfect smoothness, you need hand and heart," he said.

The bamboo authorities from across the region have confirmed that this has been for the first time bamboo has been used for kitchen purpose. "This is good innovation," said Mr Kamesh Salam, the regional head of the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre(CBTC) of the North East.

"This is purely a new form bamboo use," said Mr Mahanta admitting that all the designs have been made by him.

The price of this cutlery is not coming cheap. His range is Rs 125 Rs 15,000. ''However I have kept most of the products in the lower range to attract the mass market'' he said.

His craft is already being noticed by the authorities and he was nominated for the national award last year, the only one from this region.
