Sirsi, Karnataka, June 25 : A five-member archaeological team has found an ancient stone idol of 'Lajje Gouri' on the banks of Abbigere tank at Mulgund in Gadag district of Karnataka.

Dr M T Kamble of the History and Archaeology department of Karnatak University, Dharwad, who headed the team, said this was one of the rare sculptures of the seventh or eighth century AD. With the unearthing of the sculpture, it seemed that the Gadag region was also under the Chalukya rulers of Badami.

He explained that the Lajje Gouri cult was popular during the the Badami Chalukya era. Lajje Gouri was worshipped as Kamalamma and Battale Gouri (naked Gouri). The Goddess was still popular among women as the deity of fertility.

Dr Kamble said the sculpture was carved in schist rock and the stone panel measured 37.5 inches width. While the chest measured 18 inches, the waist was 13 inches. The legs were spread apart and elbows rested on the knees. Some of the ornaments that adorned the Goddess were damaged.

A comparative study of the newly found sculpture with similar ones found earlier elsewhere was on, he added.
