Traders loan tomato to protest inflation
Varanasi, June 24 (UNI) In a symbolic protest over rise in prices of essential commodities, traders here today staged a unique agitation by organising a 'Tomato Loan Programme'.
The programme, organised near Jal Sansthan block in Bhelupur area by over a dozen traders bodies, saw traders offer tomato as loan to people -- reeling under soaring prices of essentials.
''The inflationary pressure created by the irresponsible governance has made fruits cheaper than vegetables. Now a kg of pomegranate is selling at Rs 35, while an equal quantity of tomato, an essential vegetable, is priced five rupees higher,'' convenor of the programme Santosh Ojha said.
''The present scenario means the middle class is left with no option, but to remain content with the sniff of tomato instead of tasting it.'' Through the symbolic protest over rise in prices of essentials, it has been stressed the days were not far, when the public compelled by non-performing government, will have to even borrow vegetables and not seek loans only for luxuries, Mr Ojha added.
One kg tomato were loaned to at least 150 commoners on signing an undertaking that in future when the price of tomato declines, the borrower will return the borrowed vegetable to us, he added.
