Bhopal, June 24: In view of a spurt in Naxal incidents in neighbouring states, the Madhya Pradesh Government has taken strict measures to prevent the menace from spreading to other regions of the state.

''Precautionary steps have been taken keeping in view the increase in Naxalite activities in neighbouring states. We will not allow Naxals to spread their tentacles in the state,'' Chief Secretary Rakesh Sahni told UNI here.

Though presently three districts -- Balaghat, Dindori and Mandla -- are Naxal-hit, a proposal has been sent to the Centre to declare Sidhi also as affected.

Pointing out that incidents in the state's naxal-affected districts could not be described as serious, Mr Sahni said caution was being exercised and necessary steps taken to contain the menace.

Claiming that the situation in the Naxal-affected districts was under control, he, however, said reports of extremist activities had been received from Sidhi recently.

Regarding alleged activities of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in Khandwa and Ujjain, he said, ''We are exercising alertness over such information and constant vigilance is being maintained.'' He added that communal peace and harmony would be maintained.
