Girl killed in elephants' mayhem
Diphu, June 24 (UNI) A two-and-half-year old girl was killed when a herd of elephants attacked a thickly populated locality in North Cachar Hills district today.
According to eyewitnesses, 26 elephants entered Burabasti village in Southern range of Hamren division forest, crossing over from across river Kopili in North Cachar Hills district last night.
They destroyed 1,000 bighas of standing sugarcane crop and remained in the field for the night.
At daybreak, when the villagers tried to chase away the herd, it entered the thickly populated locality of Kheroni.
The girl was killed when the elephants attacked the people. She came under a running truck while trying to escape.
However, the elephants returned to the forests towards evening.
The local people alleged that the forest authorities did not respond even after being informed about the incident.
