Educate women for their safety:JSWWCD

Ranchi, Jun 24 (UNI) Every 54 and 43 minutes there is a case of rape and women trafficking in the country respectively.

Disclosing this alarming data at a state-level workshop here, a top Jharkhand government offical today said there are only 923 females against 1000 males in the country adding the miserable literacy rate among women has remained constant at 39.5 per cent since years.

Saying nutrition programmes were not enough for well being of women, the workshop emphasised on legal rights and awareness campaign for the fairer sex.

The workshop, organised by Jharkhand Social Welfare(JSWWCD) for Women and Child Development department, was of the opinion that crime against women had increased and advocated empowerment of women through education and awareness.

Social welfare director Puja Singhal Purwar highlighted the atrocities committed against women, mainly domestic violence, dowry torture and sexual harassment and gender bias.

Department secretary Mridula Sinha expressed concern over imbalance in sex ratio and said cases of atrocities on women added to the sorry state of affairs.

In order to erase gender inequality, Ms Sinha put forward a seven-point plan which included property rights to women,economic rights,check on trafficking and violence and improving the status of single women in the society.

Even women officals were not sensitive about complaints of women atrocities, she added.
