Credit card gang busted

Bhopal, June 24 (UNI) Four members of an interstate gang, involved in getting credit cards made in name of government officials and withdrawing several lakhs of rupees, were today arrested, police said.

Superintendent of Police Anant Kumar Singh told reporters here that the gang's kingpin, New Delhi-resident Pradeep Kumar, who has a diploma in international relations and personnel management, his brother Kuldeep Sharma alias Sandeep, Andhra Pradesh's Sinkandrabad-residents Pramod Agrawal and N Ashok Kumar were arrested.

Kuldeep's wife Suvrachna, who is also a member of the group, was arrested in New Delhi in February. Pradeep and Kuldeep had been absconding since then.

A large number of credit cards, ATM PIN code, fake seals, cheque books and pass books of various banks, mobile phones, a compact disc (CD) containing scanned performa of preparing fake PAN cards and driving licenses, hard disc and 130 visiting cards were seized from the accused.

On a tip-off that some young men were selling various products at low price after making purchases from various cities, police kept close vigil on the accused and arrested them from a hotel here yesterday.

Mr Singh said a hard disc, seized from the accused, contained phone numbers and addresses of various government officials. Police suspected that the information was used to get credit cards made.

Taking advantage of competition between various credit card companies and using 'Loan on Phone' scheme of various banks, the accused had obtained draft credit cards of several lakhs of rupees.

Mr Singh said the main centre of activity of the gang had been in New Delhi. The accused used to rent government houses in posh colonies in the national capital and filled forms for credit cards by enclosing fake pay slips.

The gang members remained at home when the concerned bank's team arrived for inspection. Initially, they took credit cards for small amounts but later got the limit increased.

He added that the accused possessed a photocopy of Gujarat's Bharuch-based Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences. The accused aimed at selling the institute in a fake manner for crores of rupees.
