New Delhi, June 23 (UNI) After two days of perspiring weather, extreme sultry conditions were experienced in the capital today even as the mercury, continuing its upwards movement since Wednesday, rose to nearly 40 degrees Celsius.

A largely clear sky and sunny weather coupled with a high humidity level of 44 per cent, led to a rise in maximum temperature to 39.9 degrees C, from 39 degrees C yesterday.

Today's maximum temperature was one degree above normal, the first time in the last one week that the mercury soared above the normal level.

Weathermen said a return to sultry conditions is largely due to a weakening of the upper air cyclonic movement over the capital, which had on Monday evening and Tuesday, led a heavy overcast sky followed by squalls and rains, plummeting the in mercury to 37.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, about two degrees below normal.

''The Upper air cyclonic movement which was strong over Delhi on Monday and Tuesday, has now moved to Uttar Pradesh and South Rajasthan,''the weather office said.

The coming days could see a further rise in maximum temperature although light showers have been forecast by the weather office during the next 24 hours.

The weather office have forecast a partly cloudy sky with possibility of light rains and thundershowers, accompanied by squall, in the capital during the next 24 hours.

The maximum temperature tomorrow is expected to rise to 40 degree C, they said.
