Seven people arrested in Bongaon Councillor murder case
Puri, June 23 (UNI) Seven people were arrested today in connection with the murder of Bongaon Congress Councillor Tapas Mitra on the sea beach here last night.
According to police, both Mitra and the assailant were involved in a murder case and the Congress Councillor was recently released on bail from the judicial custody.
Those detained were identified as Samal Bairagi, Anirban Das, Manotosh Ghosh, Sudev Ghosh and Tapan Sukra. Police were also investigating the possible involvement of local criminals in the incident.
Mitra was shot dead by an unidentified assailant here last night while he was sitting on the Puri beach.
He was rushed to the District Headquarter Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
During interrogation of the detained persons, the police learnt that the assailant and the victim had jointly undertaken a number of criminal operations in the past.
The unidentified killer was a member of the 260 visitors from North 24-Pragana who arrived in the city on June 20. The killing, police said, was a fallout of a deal between the two.
Meanwhile, a police team from Bongaon arrived here today to help the Puri police in the investigation. Deputy Inspector General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, who inspected the site, instructed the police to make a thorough search of the hotels to trace the killer.
