New Delhi, June 23 (UNI) The Congress today strongly condemned the Madhya Pradesh government's reported move to remove the name of Jawaharlal Nehru from the primary school text books, describing it as a ''blatant attempt to politicise and distort Indian history.'' ''We call upon the MP government to drop this highly condemnable move and not to make any further attempt to distort and re-write history,'' party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters.

Nehru was one of the most ''stalwart, iconic and highly revered freedom fighters who played a steller role in the independence movement of our country and was the primary architect of our democracy as the first Prime Minister of India,'' she said.

Further, his humanistic values, his vision of India, the building of our self-reliance, the contribution that India made under his leadership to the Non-Aligned Movement and to the world in general were something that could not be under-estimated, the Congress said.

As such, the state government's attempt was not only bound to fail but was nothing more than a blatant attempt to politicise and distort Indian history, she said.
