Vijayawada, June 23 (UNI) Institute of chartered accountants of India (ICAI) President T N Manoharan today said more chartered accountants were required as there was an acute shortage in the country.

Addressing reporters here, he said out of 1.30 lakh enrolled in the institute earlier, nearly 10,000 members left for abroad causing the shortage.

In 2005, 7,455 newly qualified Ca's enrolled in ICAI, he said.

He said posts meant for chartered accountants were not being filled-up due to the shortage.

Giving an example he said that if there were 20 posts in public and private sectors meant for CA's, only 12 are being filled up and the remaining eight were being left out due to non-availability of CA's.

The ICAI president said that it had five regional centres and 106 branches in the country. Two more branches will be added soon at Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh and additional centres at Sambalpur in West Bengal.

He said 14 ICAI chapters were functioning abroad. 15 institutes will be opened in Kuwait to cater to the needs of its members.
