Lightning toll reaches 64 in Marathwada region

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, June 23 (UNI) The death toll in Marathwada region due to lightning strikes has reached 64, with 12 more deaths reported on the seventh day, from six of the eight districts of the division today.

According to official sources at the divisional commissionerate here, four people were killed due to lightning in Hingoli today, followed by Beed (two), Latur (two), Parbhani(two), Aurangabad (one) and Osmanabad (one).

With 12 more deaths due to lightning from the region, the toll has reached 64, with Latur registering highest number of deaths at 15, followed by Beed 13, Aurangabad 10, Jalna 7, Osmanabad 7, Parbhani 5, Hingoli 4 and Nanded 3.

As per the information available at the divisional headquarters here, as many as 42 people have been injured and several cattle killed or injured in the natural calamity in the last seven days.

Meanwhile, all the eight districts of the region have received moderate rainfall today, with the division's average rainfall reaching to a comfortable level of 58 mm, since the beginning of monsoon this year.

According to the rainfall figures of the day, Osmanabad recorded the highest rainfall of 27.3 mm, followed by Aurangabad 13.9 mm, Latur 13.2 mm, Beed 10.8 mm, Parbhani 10.4 mm, Hingoli 9.8 mm, Jalna 9.5 mm and Nanded 6.3 mm.

Sowing has picked up well in the districts following rains.
