Bangalore, June 23 (UNI) The Congress favoured taking back the alleged excess land acquired by the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE) for the controversial Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project and distributing it among farmers from whom it was acquired.

Informing this to newspersons here today after holding a party meeting on the BMIC issue, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Mallikarjuna Kharge said party leaders discussed the issue in detail and supported any move to take back the excess land from NICE and distribute it among the farmers.

Wondering why former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda was opposing the project, he pointed out that it was Mr Gowda who had vetted the project proposal when he was the Chief Minister and was responsible for bringing in an amendment to the Land Reforms Act, which facilitated removal of major obstacles coming in the way of the BMIC project. Moreover, after opposing the project in the name of farmers, he was against handing over the excess land to them, he noted.

Mr Kharge said senior party leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Dharam Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the Council H K Patil, former Speaker Ramesh Kumar, former Ministers R V Deshpande, D K Shivakumar and Prof B K Chandrasekhar participated in the meeting.

To a question, he said there was no move to replace the present Opposition leaders in both the Houses of the Karnataka Legislature.

He would take measures to revamp the party at the block level as suggested by AICC General Secretary incharge of Karnataka A K Antony.
