DPI wants all party meet on Lankan issue
Chennai, Jun 22 : The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) today urged the DMK Government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the Sri Lankan Tamil issue and press for India's intervention to resolve the crisis.
In a statement here, DPI General Secretary Thol Thirumavalavan claimed like the 1983 genocide, the situation in the Tamil areas in the island was worsening by the day and the state and Central governments had the responsibility to stop the atrocity and save the Tamils.
Stating a need had arisen for all political parties and Tamil organisations in the state to raise their voice in unison for the protection of Tamils in Sri Lanka, the Dalit leader sought the immediate intervention of the Centre to 'stop the Sri Lankan forces from attacking the Tamils and fishermen from Tamil Nadu.
To discuss the issue, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi should convene an all-party meeting, he said, adding when the ruling party, its allies and Opposition parties came together sinking their differences, it would exert pressure on the Sri Lanka Government.
To express the solidarity of the people of Tamil Nadu, he said the DPI's rally scheduled for July eight would be organised as ''an all party rally.
To work out the modalities, he would hold discussions with various political parties here on June 27.
