Carcasses of peacock, hyena found in Gir Forest in Gujarat
Junagadh, Gujarat, June 22 (UNI) Gir Forest officials have found one carcass each of a peacock and a hyena from Muni Ashram village in Vasavadar range, about 50 kms from here, of Gir forest in Junagadh district.
Chief Forest Conservator Officer (Gir Forest) Bharat Pathak told UNI that these carcasses were spotted in burnt conditions by the foresters yesterday.
Both the bodies have been sent to veterinary hospital at Sasan Gir for postmortem.
Mr Pathak said the burnt body of peacock suggestes that it was poached to be consumed as food. However, it is still unclear as to why a hyena was killed and burnt as its meat is not considered eatable.
The exact cause of the deaths would be known only after receiving the postmortem reports, he said.
Meanwhile, local wildlife activists have demanded a thorough investigation into the killings and stern action against the guilty.
