Understanding Bangalore's job psyche

Bangalore: Employment is very synonymous with a growing city like Bangalore. The city's growth has been attributed to the rise in IT, retail and manufacturing related activity. So if you are a Bangalorean and you are worried about your future, then stop worrying.

Research conducted by Gallup Poll reveals that employment levels in the city have remained pretty stable. The survey says that Bangalore was the preferred destination for the IT/ITES sector. While there are growing number of graduates in art and media, engineers with an MBA background still manage to draw big wage packets.

It is important for young engineers to know that the city is becoming a hub for product development companies. Many multi-national and Indian companies have mushroomed over the past couple of years in this space.

From mobile telephony to fraud detection systems, the city has something to suite your taste. But you need to be experienced in deep domain skills like J2EE, .Net and Java based applications.

The proportion of companies (IT, manufacturing and others) expecting to hire at the entry level is at 36 per cent, however close to 90 per cent companies here have expressed an intention to hire at the junior level (1-3 years).

The middle level, defined as people with three to seven years experience, also has high demand with 26 per cent companies expecting to hire at this level. However only 6 per cent were looking for senior pros.

Bangalore in the last fiscal has seen a rise in marketing and PR related jobs. Evidently so, as the growth of retail and IT industry has contributed to PR related services. With decent salaries many art and marketing students have opted to take PR as a possible career.

The Gallup Poll puts it at a healthy 31 per cent, followed by employment in manufacturing and the production sector at 30 per cent. The IT industry is employing at a steady 23 per cent in the city.

Temporary employment is another area that has picked up in Bangalore. Students are employed to train fresh Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) employees. Around 6 per cent (mostly students) are in the 'tempting' space.

The salaries are competitive. But depends on the bargaining strength of the prospective employee.
