Silk Mark aims at protecting the interests of consumers

New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) Aimed at generic promotion of Natural Silks, a ''Silk Mark Scheme'' has been launched by the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), to empower the consumers with the ability to identify 100 per cent pure silk.

SMOI has brought out Silk Mark, a Quality Assurance label for silk, which was launched in June 2004 by Union Textile Minister Shankersinh Vaghela at Bangalore.

The mark is not just applicable on silk sarees, but also on all silk products - primary, intermediate to finished such as raw silk yarn, garments, carpets, dress materials, accessories and furnishings.

SMOI currently has over 400 members and 14 'Silk Mark' labeled products which have reached the market and are available at leading retail outlets which are authorised users of Silk Mark across the country.

To create awareness among consumers and industry about silk, SMOI has been conducting seminars, workshops and exhibitions across the country.

SMOI has even launched mobile testing vans to enable consumers to test purity of silk.

SMOI is a registered society sponsored by Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles.

Silk Mark is aimed at protecting the interests of consumers, manufacturers and traders of pure silk. It is also aimed at generic promotion of silk and building brand equity of Indian silk at home and internationally, according to a SMOI release here.
