Pakistan Rangers to particpate in Indo-Pak Mela
On the Indo-Pak International Border, June 21: The Pakistani Rangers will join their Indian counterparts in the centuries old Chambiyal Mela close to the International Border (IB) in Ramgarh Sector tomorrow.
''All the arrangements have been given final shape.'' Deputy Inspector General of BSF GS Virk said. Though most of the arrangements for the Mela have been made by the 39 Battalion of the BSF, the local people are making their own arrangements to make the Mela a grand success.
The 317-year old Chambliyal mela brings the people from both sides of IB closer and symbolises the centuries old cultural legacy of India and Pakistan. The mela, which is celebrated on both sides of the border even during the times of war, is taking place in the backdrop of Indo-Pak Peace process.
For centuries, this mela has united the people of different religions, caste and creed. Even in times of animosity between the two nations, it has acted as a catalyst in bonding the people.
The Baba Chambliyal shrine is at the edge of the zero line on the Indo-Pak Border in Ranbir Singh Pura sector of Indian territory, which adjoins Sialkot district of Pakistan's Punjab province. What makes the shrine so unique for both India and Pakistan is its popularity in both countries, with pilgrims from as far as North West Frontier province of Pakistan come here to attend the Mela.
The Pakistani village of Sayyedawali, where people every year wait for the mud and water from the shrine, is about 100 metres away. BSF men will hand over the mud and water to the Pakistan Rangers of the Chenab regiment. From Pakistan side Mazar Hussien, head of Saidanwali village, would lead the delegation of civilians.
People with all sorts of skin problems come here and rub themselves with the mud from the pit, which they call shakkar' or sugar and water from the well and stand in the sun for some days. It is believed that rubbing soil of this shrine cures people of their Skin diseases.
