K'taka health officials asked to check spread of epidemics

Mysore, June 21 (UNI) Alarmed at the increased incidence of cholera, gastroenteritis and other diseases in the district, Deputy Commissioner S Selvakumar today instructed the health and water supply department officials to take preventive measures to check the spread of the epidemics.

Presiding over a meeting of Epidemic Disease Prevention Coordination Committee, he said there was a rise in such incidences, compared to last year, and 13 cases of cholera had been reported in the district from January this year. He asked District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr P K Sreenivas to take steps to check the spread of the diseases.

Dr Sreenivas disclosed that 592 cases of typhoid were reported in the district, of which 153 cases had come to light in May alone.

Most of the cases were reported from Mysore city and Periyapatna taluk due to contaminated water, food and lack of hygiene. As many as 537 gastroenteritis cases were reported, including 148 in May, and one person had succumbed to the disease. The highest number of gastroenteritis cases was reported from Mysore and Nanjangud. The number of Malaria cases had come down this year and though dengue fever was suspected, there was no confirmation by medical tests.
