Bhilai Steel Plant start producing 260m long rails
New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) - a unit of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has begun producing the 260 metre long rails.
According to an official statement issued here today, these rails are manufactured by welding together four rails of 65 meters each at its state-of-the-art Flash Butt Rail Welding Plant. Rails of 65 metre length are welded together by an automatic machine imported from Sweden. With its interior alignment and stripping system, the machine ensures production of lasting rail joints. The weld joints are straightened by laser-controlled technology with maximum accuracy. The joints are tested for their soundness by ultrasonic method.
A set of synchronised rail handling devices ensure safe shifting and loading of the welded panels onto the special transport rakes.
The production of these long rails enables a reduction in the number of weld joints per track Kilometre to one-fifth. Fewer weld joints ensures greater comfort and safer rail journey.
The Indian Railways is the bulk user of rails produced at the BSP, the statement added.
