Flood situation improves in Asom
Guwahati, June 20 (UNI) The overall flood situation in Asom improved today with the receding of water level of all rivers but reports of erosion poured in from several places of the state.
Official sources said the first wave of flood hit 16 of total 27 districts in the state affecting about 5.50 lakh people spreading over to 847 villages of these districts.
Altogether 48,647 hectare area have been affected by the floods and another 9,439 hectare of crop land have also been affected by the natural calamities in the state so far.
The affected districts are Nagaon, Marigaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhemaji, Cachar, Jorhat, Kamrup, N C Hills, Barpeta, Nalbari, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sonitpur, sources said.
The authorities have opened 73 relief camps to provide shelters to the flood affected people. Though the inmates of relief camps started returning to their respective villages, 28,000 people were still living in different relief camps, the sources said.
The state government has so far sanctioned and released Rs 2 lakhs to each Deputy commissioner and Rs 1 lakh to each sub divisional officer as adhoc gratuitous relief for flood relief purposes. The officials concerned at the district and subdivisions, have been asked to make round the clock vigil over the situation, they said.
