Shillong, Jun 19 (UNI) The Meghalaya State Commission for Women today suggested the ruling Congress led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to strenthen the police outposts with women police so that violence against women could be dealth with.

''The police was not serious in taking up cases on crime against women even when reported'', MSCW Chairperson Biloris Lyndem told reporters here adding that most of the police officers and police Outposts are manned by male police, who are not that "sensitive" to such issues.

Ms Lyndem alleged that various NGOs in the state recently had presented a picture on violence against women in far away remote villages which go unreported and even when reported to police the culprit escapes without any punishments.

The Chairperson, however, said she would take up the matter with the state government to strengthen the police outpost with a women cell to cater the needs of the society.

Ms Lyndem, who attended a meeting recently at Jowai, urged upon the traditional institution heads to cooperate and work closely with the police to curb the atrocities and crimes against women.

''Frequent checking of the video parlours showing different kinds of pornographic films should be taken up in a routine manner'', she said while poiting out that sex education should be imparted in all the higher secondary schools of the district.

Further, she said, short term action has been taken by the Surveillance Committee of Women Organisation created in every village to create awareness and educate the women and girls the need to file a complaint on any crime committed against them.
