NESO demands special education policy
Aizawl, June 19 (UNI) North East Students Organisation (NESO) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the largest student body in Mizoram. have jointly urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to look into their several long-pending demands including setting up a special education policy for the NE region.
NESO delegation, led by its chairman Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, and MZP group, led by its president P C Laltlansanga, called on the Prime Minister yesterday and submitted an eight-point charter of demands.
NESO vice chairman Lamunanpuia Punte said the student leaders had asked Mr Singh to take immediate steps on the various demands which includes establisment of National Youth Commision which would work for the educated unemployed youths of the region and announce NE states as special economic zone.
Both NESO and MZP members also demanded formation of a seperate inter-state boundary commission in the respective NE states in order to curb the on-going border disputes.
Other demands included check on the large influx from Bangladesh, immediate removal of Armed Forces Special Power Act in the region, and to provide J&K status to NE states.
On the issue of illegal migrants, the student leaders demanded scrapping of the Foreigners Tribunal Order 2006 and Clause 3 (1AB) of the Citizenship Act that accorded citizenship to the children of illegal migrants born on or before 2004.
According to some student leaders Dr Singh said north-eastern region was being treated as special economic zone.
He assured the student leaders that priority would be given to North Eastern Council (NEC).
