New Delhi, Jun 18 (UNI) The National Akali Dal (NAD) today launched a protest demonstration against the sudden spurt in the price of essential commdities and demanded that Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit resign over her failure to curb the price rise.

NAD president Paramjit Singh Pamma, who led the protest at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, where he sold dal and other cereals at Rs 20 per kilogram as a mark of protest, said the government had failed to meet the aspirations of the people and hence must resign.

''The price of essential commodities had sky-rocketted and things of daily needs like vegetables had gone beyond the reach of the common man. If this was governance, the Sheila Dikshit government must be thrown out from power.'' If the present Delhi government cannot deliver the basics of a civilised life it must make way for a better person who could deliver the goods, he added.

He said selling of essentials at much below market price was being done by him as a mark of protest which was also a wake-up call to the government to rise from its slumber before people were forced to take the reins in their own hands.
