Over 60 pc polling registered in council elections in K'taka

Bangalore, June 17 (UNI) An estimated 60 to 65 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the biennial elections to the Karnataka Legislative Council held today for filling three seats each from the Graduates and Teachers constituencies.

The elections were held to Bangalore, North-East and South-West Graduates constituencies and Bangalore, South-East and South teachers constituencies.

Official sources here said Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Udupi, Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Davanagere districts witnessed a heavy voter turnout of 67 per cent and 74 per cent in the south-west Graduates and Teachers Constituency respectively.

In the North-east Graduate Constituency, comprising Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Bellary and Harapanahalli taluk in Davanagere district, about 55 to 58 per cent of polling was reported. In Gulbarga town, the police prevented a person from casting a bogus vote.

While a poll percentage of 80 to 85 per cent was registered in Tumkur district for the South Teachers constituency, polling was dull in Bangalore and North-east Graduates Constituencies with only about 55 to 60 per cent of the electorate turning up to cast their votes.
