Flood situation remains grim in Asom

Guwahati, June 16 : The overall flood situation in Asom remained grim though the water level of the Brahmaputra, Barak and most of their tributaries started receding gradually today.

However, the Brahmaputra was still flowing above its danger marks at Dibrugarh and Neamatighat, the Kopili at Kampur, the Puthimari at Kamrup and the Barak at Cachar, official sources said.

Over 4.50 lakh population have been affected by the flood in the state in 13 districts spreading over 748 villages so far, the sources said.

The total area affected by the flood was estimated at 37,808 hectare and crop area affected was 8070 hectare, it said.

The water levels of all the rivers in Barak valley were receding gradually but the situation remained grim as both roads and rail link continued remaining cut off for the fourth day today. 287 villages with a population of 1,69,940 and land area of 7260 hectare and crops area of 557 hectare had also been affected by the flash flood in the district.

Road communication between Silchar and Guwahati still remained disrupted. 32 relief camps and seven relief centres had been opened.

In Karimganj district, water level of rivers was receding. 266 villages with a population of 1,34,498, land area of 8235 hectare had been affected by floods.

Roads and rail communication in a few places still remained disrupted.

Report of fresh breach at three places under Patharkandi, Ramkrishnanagar and Badarpur circle areas had been received.

River water entering through these breaches were affecting fresh areas.

In Hainlakandi district, water level of the rivers was flowing above danger level with receding trend. 45 numbers of villages with a population of 27,000 had been affected by the first wave of floods.

In Nalbari district, erosion by river Brahmaputra at N C Pubkajia, Kalarchar and Bhangnamari villages under Barkhetri revenue circle was continuing. Crop land areas of 21 villages of Upper Borbhag Mouza under Barbhag revenue circle had been inundated by flood water of the Nona, Pagladia and Baralia.

In Kamrup district in Rangia subdivision, water level of the Nona was steady at Barkukuria and receding in other places.

In Barpeta a population of over 1000 and land area of 533 hectare had been affected by the recent wave of flood.

In Lakhimpur district, 15 villages with a population of 5,770 and land area of 608 hectare had been affected by flood. Though the water of all rivers was receding, severe erosion by the Brahmaputra in several places of the district had threatened the vast human habitation.
