UP abolishes 'tehbazari' system in urban bodies
Lucknow, June 15 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh government has abolished the 'tehbazari' system in all the urban local bodies of the state with immediate effect.
The decision is expected to provide relief, particularly to 'patari dukandar' (pavement vendors) and petty shopkeepers.
'Tehbazari' is a tax collected by contractors on a daily basis from street vendors in a particular area. Its contracts are awarded by municipalities in auctions.
According to a circular issued by the Urban Development secretary Amal Kumar Verma, the 'tehbazari' system caused several problems, and was one of the main reasons for creating bottlenecks in the smooth flow of traffic.
The circular has been sent to all divisional commissioners, district magistrates, municipal commissioners, nagar palika parishads, nagar panchayats and director local bodies in UP.
