POSCO-India offers scholarships for Indian Students

Bhubaneswar, Jun 15(UNI) In a bid to promote academic collaboration between India and Korea, POSCO-India today announced a series of scholarships and grants for meritorious students from leading universities of Orissa and other parts of India.

The initiative, which included various programmes on Scholarships Research Grants and Fellowships, would be awarded to students from India by the POSCO TJ Park Foundation, a release from POSCO-India,an Indian subsidiary of the South Korea Steel major POSCO said.

The scholarships would be given to about 60 students, research grant to 2 scholars and fellowships to 5 Indian students in Korea.

However, fifty per cent of scholarship would be given to students of Orissa where the Company has proposed to set up a 12 million tonne steel plant at an estimated cost of Rs 51,000 crores, considered to be the largest FDI in the country.

This would be a long-term commitment made by POSCO-India so that the maximum number of students benefit from this project,according to its Chairman cum Managing Director Soung-Sik-Cho.

POSCO-India would provide scholarships and grants to exceptional individuals from leading Indian universities with the aim to nurture leaders and help build global knowledge.'' Those selected for the scholarship would receive an annual grant of USD 500 to be paid in a single installment. Out of the 30 students in Orissa, 15 would be from Utkal University, 7 from KIITS Deemed University and 8 from Biju Pattnaik University of Technology.

Similarly 20 students from Delhi University (DU) and 10 students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) would be recommended for the scholarship.

The two research scholars to be selected under the POSCO TJ Park Foundation Research grant for Asian studies would be from Utkal University in Orissa and Delhi University. A research grant of up to 10,000 USD will be accorded per thesis to these scholars.

They would be a part of 20 research scholars to be selected from across Asia for various research projects. Similarly,the fellowship for two-year Masters Programme in Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) would be awarded to five students at one of the top Korean universities. While two of them would be from Utkal University as many from JNU and one from Delhi University.

The fellowship covered full tuition fees and an annual stipend of 12 million Korean won (approx 12,000 USD).The annual fellowship would be renewable for the duration of the student's study in the master's programme at the Korean University.
