Meghalaya CM quits, Rymbai elected new CLP leader
Shillong, Jun 15 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang tendered his resignation to Governor S S Sidhu after his trusted-aide J D Rymbai was uanimously elected as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party today.
Earlier , a special Congress Legislature Party (CLP) was held at Hotel Pine Wood here replacing Mr Lapang with Mr Rymbai, Minister in-charge of Parliamentary Affairs as the CLP leader.
The CLP meeting was held under the leadership of Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, party observer in-charge of North East and Union Minister Oscar Fernandes, who were deputed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
The CLP meeting was attended by outgoing Chief Minister D D Lapang and his Cabinet colleagues, 17 rebel Congress MLAs besides party secretray in-charge Meghalaya Maj (Retd) Ved Prakash and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Onwardly Nongtdu.
Talking to reporters, Mr Mukherjee said Mr Rymbai was elected after Mr Lapang decided to quit to ensure political stability in the state.
He said the CLP members had also accepted Mr Lapang's resignation, adding the Legislators and the party appreciated the services rendered by Mr Lapang.
