Kuwait to look into problems of Indian workers

New Delhi, June 15 (UNI) Kuwait today assured India that it will look into the concerns of Indian workers, sought investment in energy and petrochemical sector and signed three agreements, including one on avoidance of double taxation.

At a delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the visiting Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, India desired that Kuwait invest in its infrastructure projects, and pointed out its expertise in biotechnology and the IT sector.

''India also desired that similar opportunities are available for Indian companies for investment in Kuwait,'' a spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry said.

The two countries agreed to have a joint commission in this regard soon, the spokesman said.

''Kuwait also agreed to look into the labour issues concerning the Indian workers in the Gulf Country.'' The two side also inked three pacts-- Avoidance of Double Taxation and for the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income (DTAT), Cooperation in Combatting Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) and Agreement on Executive Programme for the Cultural and Information Exchange for 2006-2008.

The Amir, who arrived here yesterday on a six-day state visit, was given a ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning.

President A P J Abdul Kalam and the Prime Minister were present at the reception.

The Amir also inspected a guard of honour at the President's House.
