J D Rymbai, new Meghalaya Chief Minister

Shillong, June 15 (UNI) The long drawn political instability in Meghalaya came to an end today with Mr J D Rymbai being sworn in as the new Chief Minister after the resignation of Mr D D Lapang.

Acting Governor Dr Shivinder Singh Sidhu administred the oath of office and secrecy at a simple ceremony at the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan this evening.

Earlier, Mr Lapang tendered his resignation to the Governor after his trusted-aide J D Rymbai was uanimously elected as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

A special Congress Legislature Party (CLP) held at Hotel Pine Wood here decided to replace Mr D D Lapang with Mr J D Rymbai, Minister in-charge of Parlimentary Affairs as the CLP leader.

The CLP meeting was held under the leadership of Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, AICC observer in-charge of North East and Union Minister Oscar Fernandez, who were deputed by AICC president Sonia Gandhi.

The CLP meeting was attended by outgoing Chief Minister D D Lapang and his Cabinet colleagues, 17 rebel Congress MLAs besides AICC secretray in-charge Meghalaya Maj (Retd) Ved Prakash and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Onwardly Nongtdu.
